Science Congress

Among the varied responsibilities of the Wisconsin Society of Science Teachers is the operation of what is known as the Wisconsin Science Congress.

WSST cosponsored the Congress for many, many years providing funds and a place for students from throughout the state to meet for their presentations. WSST is now the sole sponsor of the Congress.

The Science Congress invites high school students to submit abstracts about long term science projects and experiments they have conducted under the guidance of their science teachers or other mentors. If selected, these students and their sponsors meet in the spring for a American Association for the Advancement of Science type of meeting. Students singly or in a team present a paper together with visuals explaining the purpose and procedures of their activity. Science teachers, college professors and graduate students in science act as coaches providing the presenters not only with encouragement but also valuable advice about improving their project and presentation.

An awards ceremony concludes the Congress where all presenters receive certificates, ribbons and gifts commemorating their efforts.
