TOPIC: What great questions do you use?

Re: What great questions do you use? 1 year 7 months ago #792

I also have made a conscious effort to say, "What questions do you have?" and leave a long enough wait time. They ask them. I like the "What do you notice?" also. Suzy's "What does that remind you of?" is a great connector. Thanks everyone for these great ideas.

I have been using "What questions do you have?" all day in all subject areas and I've noticed that wording is far more inviting for my 2nd graders. "What do you notice?" is sort of a mantra within Responsive Classroom which is our school wide classroom management system. It's rather exhilarating how this is all jiving!
Other good questions that mesh with science inquiry as well as other areas of instruction/management:

How did you accomplish that?
If you did (it) again what would you do differently and what would you keep the same?
What do you think is happening?
Does this/that remind you of anything? (Making connections is very powerful, particularly within reading... we work on connections within literacy, particularly reading non-fiction within science.)

I hope all is well with you guys!

I as well have been using the "What questions do you have?" - the students look at me funny first and then ask questions! It has been working well though.

I could have used that today when we did a lab on "observations." I will try to use it on Monday as we post-lab.

I have incorporated the, "What questions do you have?" and have gotten some questions both about what we were discussing and on unrelated topics. All good.

We learned a little about the power of the wording of a question: "What questions do you have?" during our sessions at Pigeon Lake. Here is another one I really like (and stole):

"What do you notice?"

Read about it from the source on Brian's blog and here.

I have often felt a push back and uncertainty from kids when I ask them to make observations, like they don't understand or are afraid of observing wrong. "What do you notice" is more inviting.
